Decontextualizing
Today in Bib Lit, my professor, Marion Bontrager, was teaching about literary pitfalls to watch out for while reading the Bible.
MB: "Now let's talk about decontextualizing. This means taking things out of context and not looking at what it is really talking about. For example there was the student who was failing all his classes. He was homesick, depressed, and behind on his inductive. In desperation he turned to the Bible for advice. He opened it randomly and read the first verse his eyes hit on, in Acts chapter 1. "Now Judas went and hanged himself". 'Hmmm...'the student thought. 'I'll try that again.' He then opened his Bible to Luke 10:37 - "And Jesus said to him, 'Go, and do thou likewise.'" One more try....and his finger stopped on John 13:27. "What you are about to do, do it quickly!"
*Marion waits for laughter to die down*
"Now that's decontextualizing."

Do It Anyway
THE PARADOXICAL COMMANDMENTS OF LEADERSHIP - by Kent M. Keith
People are illogical, unreasonable and self-centered - Love them anyway.
If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish ulterior motives - Do good anyway.
If you are successful, you win false friends and true enemies - Succeed anyway.
The good you do today will be forgotten tomorrow - Do good anyway.
Honesty and frankness make you vulnerable - Be honest and frank anyway.
The biggest people, with the biggest ideas can be shot down by the smallest people with the smallest minds - Think big anyway.
People favor underdogs but only follow top dogs - Fight for a few underdogs anyway.
What you spend years building may be destroyed overnight - Build anyway.
People really need help, but may attack you if you do help them - Help them anyway.
Give the world the best you have and you may get kicked in the teeth. Give the world your best anyway.
If better is possible, then good is not enough.

Meh
So I just realized I haven't blogged in over a month. And I really don't have much to say anyway. Let's see......
Camp Good News was a lot of fun :)
Still working at Applebees about 35 hours a week.
I go back to Hesston in 15 days. Super excited!
and that's about it.
Maybe I'll feel more talkative later.

Crazy Love
"A man by his sin may waste himself, which is to waste that which on earth is most like God. This is man's greatest tragedy and God's heaviest grief." - A.W. Tozer

krow
So, in case any of you are not up to speed on my life, I started at Applebees in Salina on Monday. So far it's going pretty good. I think I can make it through a couple months there at least! :) The people are cool. Right now all the stuff I need to learn is pretty overwhelming. I lie in my bed at night and it takes me awhile to go to sleep because all the knowledge they tried to cram into my head that day is still swirling around in there. So pray for me please that I'll learn everything I need to know and that I won't make any huge mistakes and not very many small ones along the way. :)

Tim (last year): "There are times I think CYIA is a tiny foretaste of what heaven will be like."
Erin (my partner last year at CYIA): Are you coming to CYIA this year, Rachel?
Me: Afraid not. I had to join the real world and get a job to pay for college. :(
Bekah: *in mock shock* Are you saying CYIA isn't the real world?
Erin: I think CYIA is a taste of the real real world.

Back from Oklahoma....
(quotes from my crazy but awesome family)
Me: Hey Mom, is okay if me, Sarah and the Hannahs go to the mall?
Mom: Well, what are you planning to do there?
Me: I don't know, just hang out.
Mom: Define "hang out."
Me *getting slightly exasperated with my mother's questioning*: We're planning to go find some drug dealers and buy stuff to get high on.
Uncle Lance: Well, how much money were you planning to spend?
:)
Sarah, walking through the mall, starts singing the beginning of "Disturbia"
Sarah: Sorry, every time my brain isn't occupied, that's the song that comes on.
Me: So it's kinda like your brain's elevator music....
Me and Sarah: Unicorns!! (private joke)
Uncle Dave (aka Silly Bomya): lomph!
(don't ask)

Life gave me lemonade and I can't imagine why.
Sorry I haven't posted in a while....not much to say I guess.
I'm still not doing much, just looking for a job with not much luck.
I drove my grandparents out to Colorado for the first part of this week, then went with my whole family to Oklahoma. Both trips were for the high school graduations of various cousins.
One of these days I'll think of something to write about.
Right now though, I'm just a little bored and a lot happy.

Home.....
Hesston's graduation was Sunday, so I'm home now. I miss my college family. So this post is the year, summed up in inside jokes.
My group has so many little things we do or say.... I'm going to go home and do all these things without even realizing it and nobody will get it. So here's a heads up for y'all....if I say or do any of these things just ignore me.
"Heck no, yayno!"
"Friction....."
"Ah, sheba!"
"Thet ther's funny raght ther, Ah don't ker who you air"
".....and then I found 5 dollars."
"Sticky buns!"
"Toolbag"
"Punk"
"Son"
if I talk and end random words with the -er sound, just ignore me
when watching a movie:
if I finish a bottled drink of some kind I might very well throw the empty plastic bottle at the TV
I will probably tell you the movie was made in Oregon
I might very well make random sniper noises
